Ingenia is a small theropod, a member of Maniraptora to which both Velociraptor and Saurornithoides also belong. You may be amazed at the big morphological differences between Ingenia skull and those of other two theropods (in Ingenia; a large opening in the lower jaw, deep and shortened anterior part of the skull, narrow and elongated openings in the cranial roof, a highly positioned external naris, etc.). Some of these cranial features (e.g.;toothless parrot-like beak) are thought to be the evidence for the avian relationship. A lack of a big crest which exists in other Oviraptorosaurids (e.g.; Oviraptor philoceratops, Rinchenia mongoliensis) is also unique to this animal. |
