Homalocephale calathocercos skull

(12 x 5 frames, 320 x 240 pixels, 758KB)

In contrast to more advanced Pachycephalosaurids with thick, rounded domeheads, Homalocephale had flat, table-like head which is thought to be used for head-to-head butting in their intraspecific combat. Rotate its skull and see how its top is flat. You will also find two round openings (=supratemporal fenestra) in the cranial roof. These openings also exists in Pachycephalosaurids, but cannot be seen in some cases due to being covered by their thickened dome. Note that its cranial roof is roughly ornamented. Maxillary teeth are also left in the upper jaw, which show a striking contrast in shape to those of carnivorous theropods shown above.
